HoD’sMessage :

It gives me immense pleasure and pride to welcome you all to the Department of Humanities. At the onset, let me introduce first the faculty members of our department who are truly committed in fulfilling the Key Result Areas set by the Department with dedication, perseverance and sheer hardwork:
  1. Dr. Arvind Kumar – Professor and Head
  2. Dr. Sadaf Jamal – Assistant Professor
  3. Mr. Sumanto Mandal – Assistant Professor
  4. Ms. Vidya Vijeta – Assistant Professor
  5. Ms. Meenakshi Choudhary – Assistant Professor
The entire team always demonstrate true professionalism and even at times go beyond the call for their duties in providing quality education on Communication Skill/ Soft Skill based on the principle of LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing Skill) to the budding engineers so that they are competent and confident enough to take head on the ever challenging and cut-throat national and international job market. Students fetching fat pay package in international companies/ MNCs like Google, Facebook, Microsoft etc during the last academic year is truly a new feather in the cap of Humanities Department and the Institute as a whole. But for good communication skill and good professional acumen, it would certainly have not been possible for the Institute to achieve this feat. Selection of more than 450+ students (around 60%) out of around 800+ students in the final year of the batch 2019- 2K22 is manifestation of the sincere hardwork and honest efforts put in by the faculty members of the department in grooming and nurturing the said engineering students aptly with good Communication/ Soft Skills. It is pertinent to mention here that out of the total campus placements during the last academic year, a lot many technocrats got foreign assignments/ engagements which prove that our students are globally competent and ready to handle any international projects.

Some of the core areas wherein we specifically focus in while grooming the engineering students comprise conducting regular GD Sessions, Lecturettes, Debates, Extempore and individual face to face interactive PI Sessions. Apart from this, we also strive to build the basics strong in understanding the sense of English language amongst the engineering students, especially those coming from humble background/ vernacular medium schools by conducting regular prescriptive grammar classes and remedial classes as well. Further, we focus on bringing in good fluency and accuracy in pronunciation and in spoken English through conducting basic phonetic classes regularly.

LABORATORIES IN THE HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT

Name of Lab

:

English Language Lab

Brief description, Infrastructure and Ergonomics at the Lab

:

The Department has a well-established fully airconditioned and well-lit English Language Lab consisting of around 50+ consoles/ systems which is running smoothly in collaboration with O’rell Talk Software Providers. It provides a perfect platform to the engineering students to check, build good sense of English Language, understanding and develop British/ US/ Indian accent with correct pronunciation. The role of the laboratory is remarkable one, especially in the case of correcting the accent of the vernacular medium engineering students who are otherwise brilliant but generally struggle in developing good speaking skill for want of limited opportunities they got during their school days.

The Lab is located at IT Building, Room No. F/31

Role of the Lab

:

The emphasis is on developing good communication skills by regularly conducting Group Discussions, Personal Interviews with students and training them on soft skills apart from creating a true sense of language with the help of prescriptive grammar in both oral and written communication. Moreover, we strive to bring in fluency and accuracy in spoken English which includes phonetics, semantics, morphology, vowel, consonants, diphthongs and syllables, juncture, pitch, intonation etc. In addition to chisel the writing skills of students practice of business correspondences, technical writing, letter writing, report writing etc. are carried out regularly. Hence, all efforts are being made to better equip our students with good communication skills, soft skills while imbibing in them social values and professional ethics.
