The Department of
Metallurgical Engineering was started in the year 1955. The department offers
4-years B.Tech degree course in Metallurgical Engineering with an annual
intake of 54 students. The department also offers two years course of M.Tech
with specializations in Physical Metallurgy and Process Metallurgy.
The faculty of the department have been actively engaged in various sponsored
research & development projects and have a large number of national and
international level publications to their credit.
The department
has well equipped laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate
programs. The important laboratories include: Metallography Lab, Heat Treatment
Lab, X-Ray Lab, Metallurgical Analysis Lab, Thermodynamics and Kinetics lab,
Fuels Lab, Electro-Hydro Lab, Mineral Dressing Lab, Foundry Lab, Metallurgical
Workshop etc. Some specialized facilities available include: JEOL JSM Scanning
Electron Microscope Model 220A, Versa Met Optical Metallograph, INSTRON
Universal Testing Machine 4206 Model 150, Siemen's XRD, 1 Kg Induction Melting
Unit etc.
The department
has a separate computer laboratory catering to the needs of the students and
staff of Met Engg as well as other departments. Presently, it has twenty PIII/PIV
PCs connected to LAN with internet facility. The laboratory has been set up with
the financial assistance from BIT Sindri Alumni Association of North America and
is named as Dr.Uday Sinha Computer Application Laboratory.
